I was going through some old audience recordings of live shows I made with a digital mini-disc recorder. This is one of my all time favorite songs, written by Dave Alvin, who has written several of my favorite songs. "King" often reminds me of the great Lefty Frizzell hit song, "Saginaw Michigan" - Dave's got him on attitude though!!! This was recorded on January 23, 2007 at the wonderful roots music club in Culver City, CA (L.A) The Cinema Bar. Nothing like performing in bars, I love how, at just before the 4:00 mark, when the song breaks down into the "Yet I still remember your tender..." lyric, where usually a dramatic vocal pause occurs, yet, as if on clue, the ol cash register rings out to bring in the next line; "kiss" - I love The Cinema!
