Morgan County line, just east of Jacksonville, Illinois, which is just east of Springfield. This is the Illinois prairie farm country I speak of in my song “Lincoln Penny”. There is still paternal family bloodline farming this country around the little towns of Franklin and Waverly, just outside of Jacksonville. The Oxleys, The Rawlings’, The Howsers, The Scholfields. Soybean country.

The Frayed Knot, a 44’ twin screw Troller built in Florida in the 1970’s sitting in the marina in La Cruz De Huanacaxtle in the Bahîa de Banderas, Mexico after a two month adventure sailing north past Guatemala, all the way up the Pacific Coast of Mexico to La Cruz from Bahia Del Sol, El Salvador.

Zacatecoluca, El Salvador. Local girl Raquel, sitting next to me, invited the captain and me into their home with more hospitality than I’d experienced in some time. We had hired her and a friend to help clean the boat while the captain and me made mechanical repairs. The home, as many are, have dirt floors, with hammocks as the main furniture. Someone handed me a guitar.

Zacatecoluca, El Salvador. The cutest little girl, I was charmed beyond belief by her and everyone else.

Raquel's Family House in Zacatecoluca, El Salvador. There's abuela, making stacks and stacks of tortillas for pupusas, she sells them to the pupusarias around town. In El Salvador, the tortillas are more like pitas than the thin, flat Mexican style. They make them thick enough to split apart and you stuff whatever food you want in there!

Out in the Pacific leavung Ixtapa, Mexico. The marina in Ixtapa was carved out of a swamp, there are still salt water crocodiles swimming around in it. Even though there was a huge and amazing mural of Sophia Loren painted on the wall of one of the swanky restaurants in this fancy port town that mystified me… Adios Ixtapa!!!

Doin' my singin' cowboy bit on my friend's little ranch in Prescott Ridge, AZ. That's TJ I'm on, a 4-year old gelding who I was working with at the time. Photo by Cynthia Roche

Suzy’s in Hermosa Beach, California. Playing my beautiful Candelas Brothers classical guitar that was stolen in a studio theft, I miss her so… I'm still lookin' for ya baby, come back!!! Photo by Dan Franzen

Howe, Indiana. My beloved 1971 Monte Carlo right before I had to sell her, heartbreaking… My first car, had her since I was 18.

Adventures with Ramblin' Jack

At Jody Foss & Charlie Parker’s little ranch just outside the town of Tomales, CA. We were on the way out of town to some gigs in Southern California. Photo by Jody Foss

The Sun Theatre in Anaheim, California; now called The Grove. Jack was opening up for the Everly Brothers. This is when I got to meet Albert Lee for the first time, he was the Everly Brother’s lead guitar player and bandleader.

Long Beach/L.A. Harbor, Foss Maritime docks. I’ve got a real good buddy, Capt. Jim, who is a tugboat captain for Foss and was kind enough to take Jack and I out for a job.

Long Beach/L.A. Harbor, Foss Maritime docks, that’s the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the background. We went out and pushed in a 900 foot container freigther and brought it all the way to it’s berth. Thanks Capt. Jim!

We had an off day in SoCal with no paid for hotel so we crashed at my apartment in Hermosa Beach. I got out of the shower and there he was playin’ “Blind Lemon Jefferson” on my Guild 12-String. Some days are diamonds...

My garage studio, Hermosa Beach - Jack asked if he could play my “electrical guitar” - so I hooked him up on the Les Paul. I’ve got a little recording of him noodling around playing some wonderful and very old songs, I was pickin’ little leads out.

Hermosa Beach - I had to take a photo of Jack’s famous Martin D-28 with the classic inlays and steer ridin’ pickguard painting.

Hermosa Beach, Ramblin’ Jack’s famous Martin D-28 - here’s a shot of his hand-written set list taped to the side.

This is somewhere off of Highway 90 in West Texas, near Marfa. Jack took this shot of me and I used it for the back of my Million Miles CD.

This was a great moment. We’re at a roadside park off of Highway 90 near Marathon, Texas. Behind the ridge there are railroad tracks. I just missed the train for photos but as we were drivin’ Jack spotted the train up ahead and there was the park so he said “pull over, I haven’t done this since with Woody I think”. As soon as I stopped he got out of the truck and pulled out his guitar and started wailin’ just as the train rolled by. He played a few more, I played a few. Did I mention some days are diamonds?

Kimberly, Oregon at Jody’s. Jody’s boyfriend at the time, Mark, drove us to the gig that night in this bitchin’ loud old Cadillac. Jack and I sat in the back seat with the double barrell in the rear window bay. It was a magical night - thanks Jode!

Napa Valley CA. Gail Stieger, Trinity Seely - an award winning cowgirl singer from British Columbia, Canada and Jack. That night I bunked up with Jack, he was kind enough to share his $160 Motel 6 room with me, cheapest around found in the town of nearby Napa. Funny thing, it didn’t seem much different than any other $39.99 Motel 6 room off of the highway, but then things are a little different in Napa Valley. I wonder what thoughts my fellow Sturgis, MI native, Tom Bodet, has on such matters…

Tomales Bay, California, Jack’s house. This is Jack sittin’ in his Jerry Garcia chair, talkin’ on the phone. The story on the Jerry Garcia chair is, Jerry liked to cruise around Marin county and would occasionaly pop in on Jack. Evidently Jerry really loved that chair so Jack let him sit in it for a while every time he came over.

The Cinema Bar, Culver City, California. Jack sitting in with his girlfriend Vicki Lee’s rockabilly band. Ms. Lee is a cousin of guitar hero Albert Lee so go figure, I’m hanging out with Mr. Lee again! He was sitting to my left as I took this photo and his arm was in a cast so no Albert on stage that night, unfortunately. Once again, he was a gentleman to visit with.

Napa, CA. On my left is Gail Steiger, a ranch foreman and friend from Prescott, AZ who’s also a poet and fine singer/songwriter. To the left of Jack is another friend, Joel Nelson, legendary Cowboy Poet and Horse Breaker from Alpine, TX. I was driving down the coast and tracked down Jack in Yountville, they were all there for a cowboy poetry event. Joel was bunking up with Gail, we hung out in their room for a nice evening of tellin’ stories and drinkin’ Cowboy Poetry wine.
The Day I Met Neil...

Pearblossom, California. Video shoot for Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s song “This Town”, off of the album, Broken Arrow. Tim Pope directed this and shot it with a hand-cranked camera once used by Fritz Lang to shoot 'Metropolis.' Neil’s Eyes are shut and eyeballs are painted on his eyelids.
